| We have recently released
our first maintenance update for VectorWorks 10. Version 10.0.1
is a free download from our website and it contains some minor
improvements to VectorWorks, LANDMARK, ARCHITECT and RenderWorks.
Also noteworthy this month, VectorWorks MECHANICAL 10.0.1 is now
available. And, for our theater crowd, SPOTLIGHT is currently
in production and will be released later this winter.
Congratulations to Mr. David Reddy of R & D Architects for winning
our November laptop giveaway. Don't forget- December is the last
month for our contest. So if you haven't upgraded to 10 yet,
you have one month left to be eligible for the contest. Good luck!

WINNER
PROFILE |
David Reddy
R & D Architects
Venice, California |
An
architect for more than twenty years, David Reddy is no
stranger to the CAD industry. Rather, he is somewhat of
a CAD connoisseur having even developed a computer modeling
and drafting program for architects and engineers. David
has used programs ranging from form•Z to CATIA. Now a devout
VectorWorks user, David actually taught MiniCAD at Tulane
University, even though he was originally hired to teach
form•Z. "I liked the simplicity of the program, and found
the 3D modeling capabilities to be similar to those found
in form•Z."
|
| His
experience with CATIA came about when he went to work for
Frank Gehry. Still, David found that VectorWorks did 99
percent of what CATIA could do, yet it was a tiny fraction
of the cost. "I have always been impressed by the reasonable
cost, ease of use, and short learning curve of VectorWorks."
|
| About
two years ago he opened his own practice, R & D Architects.
Now David uses VectorWorks for designing residential properties.
"I looked at other CAD programs, including AutoCAD and ArchiCAD,
but nothing could measure up to the overall value of VectorWorks.
It is a really comprehensive, well-integrated package for
2D and 3D modeling."
|
And
when asked how he felt about winning the Apple Titanium
Powerbook, David replied, "I am stoked."

| QUICK
TIPS |
The center of an Arc is now measured from the center of the bounding box. This is different than in previous versions. |
To edit
a roof, switch to plan view, select it and then use the 2D Reshape
tool on it. |
To make
a PDF from a VW file, you need Acrobat PDFwriter or the Acrobat
Distiller from Adobe Acrobat. |
| Where
did the tools go in Version 10? |
| In 10, the palettes
were refined and tools that were visible may be "hidden" under
other tools. If you see a tool with a small black arrow on the
bottom, you can click and hold it down to display additional tools
for selection. |
| How can
I move a 3D object in the Z axis? |
| One simple way of doing
this is with the Move 3D command under the Tool > Move menu. Another
way is to create a symbol out of the object. Then, you can control
the Z height and other location coordinates from the Object Info
palette. |
| Why can't
I select an item that I can see on my drawing? |
| Determine whether that
object is in a layer or class that is active or at least on a
layer or class that is accessible. Accessibility to other layers
and classes relies on Layer options and Class options being set
to Show/Snap/Modify Others from the Organize menu. Also be sure
that those layers are in the same scale and view as the active
layer. |
