We have great news about VectorWorks! Macworld Magazine released
their latest review, and once again, VectorWorks 11 scores top
honors. Receiving 4.5 out of 5 mice, Macworld states:
"VectorWorks, a 2D and 3D CAD (computer- aided design) staple
for architecture, design, and engineering pros, is proof that
you don't have to run Autodesk's AutoCAD™ on a PC to be
taken seriously as a designer."
We'll have the complete review on our website shortly, so check it out. We're also proud to announce that VectorWorks 11 is making it's mark on the international front. In addition to its release in Japan last month, France has recently released version 11 and other European countries look forward to releasing version 11 this month, as well.

The use of a highly flexible computer aided design (CAD)
system provides a very high level of design freedom to architects
at Morehouse and MacDonald, Lexington, Massachusetts, who
specialize in high-end custom homes.

"Like most of the architects at this firm, I got started using AutoCAD software and got used to the idea of building a drawing one line at a time by entering text commands," said Peter Bruneau, Project Manager for the company. "We took a giant step forward by switching to VectorWorks. All major commands are on icons right in front of us and we can draw with polygons and rectangles, which is faster because far fewer lines have to be drawn."

Anthony Frausto, Information Technology Manager for the firm added that: "Our CAD software allows us to work in 2D and 3D using the same interface and same tools, making it possible to view the design from any viewpoint in the early concept phase and address issues that otherwise wouldn't become apparent until we had much more time and money invested in the project. VectorWorks also provides a huge array of tools that aid in communicating with clients, such as the ability to easily incorporate bitmaps into a drawing and generate subtle color overlays."

Morehouse and MacDonald is one of the leading designers
of high-end customer homes in New England. The company typically
spends on the order of a year working with its clients to
develop a concept design that turns their structural requirements
and dreams into reality. The company's client base is primarily
in the Boston metropolitan area but it is designing more
and more structures in other parts of the country based
primarily on the needs of its current clients.

"The challenge of designing high-end, one-of-a-kind homes
is that nearly everything has to be built from scratch,
which in turn means that everything has to be designed from
scratch," Frausto said.

If you've used AutoCAD in the past and miss
the move and copy capabilities as set by a distance, you are in
luck! VectorDepot
has the two plug-ins you've missed - Point to Point Copy and Point
to Point Move.
|
|
Point to Point Move menu command is used to move objects by selecting
a start and end point. It is easier than ever to move objects
by a specific distance by just drawing a line.
Point to Point Copy menu command is used to copy objects by specifying
a start and end point. It also allows you to copy a specific entity
to additional locations without having to initiate the menu again.
To use these two menu commands, first they need to be downloaded.
To do this, go to www.vectordepot.com.
Click on "Plug-ins" along the left side. Scroll about
halfway down the page to Pt2Pt Move and Pt2Pt Copy. Select the
appropriate platform- Mac or Windows. Download the plug-in, and
extract the compressed file. The extracted files should be named
Pt2Ptmove.vsm and Pt2PtCopy.vsm, respectively. Move these files
to the Plug-ins folder inside the VectorWorks folder. These
plug-ins are currently supported in VectorWorks 10 and 11 only.
The plug-ins will need to be added to the workspace. To do this,
launch VectorWorks. Go to File>Workspaces>Workspace Editor. Click
OK to Edit the Current Workspace. Under the Menu tab, expand All
Menus. The available menus are listed alphabetically. Scroll down
to Pt2Pt Move and Pt2Pt Copy. On the right side of the dialog
box, choose and expand the menu the new plug-ins are to be added
to. On the left side of the dialog box, select the new plug-in
to be moved. Drag this menu to the right side under the chosen
menu and release the mouse. Repeat for the other plug-in if desired.
When the plug-ins have been situated in the desired menu on the
right, click OK.
To use Point to Point Move, select an object to be moved. (See
Image
1-1) Select Pt2Pt Move from the menu it was assigned in the
above workspace editor step. (See
Image 1-2) Click on one point and then another to specify
the distance and direction in which the object is to be moved.
(See
Image 1-3) The object will now be placed relative to the path
and distance drawn. (See
Image 1-4)
To use Point to Point Copy, select an object to be copied. (See
Image
2-1) Select Pt2Pt Copy from the menu it was assigned in the
above workspace editor step. (See Image
2-2) Click on one point and then another to specify the distance
and direction in which the object is to be copied to. (See
Image 2-3 and Image
2-4) The object will now be copied to point specified relative
to the path and distance drawn. (See Image
2-5) The menu remains active, therefore it is possible to
continue copying the original object to additional locations.

VectorWorks Inks Agreement with IntegrityWare |
|
Nemetschek North America announced today that it has signed a
partnership agreement with IntegrityWare for its Solids ++ modeling
kernel. Company officials state that the recent success of the
VectorWorks 3D Power Pack has prompted NNA to invest in advanced-solids
modeling, and that Solids++ is headed in the right direction and
will provide VectorWorks users more robust solids, surface, curve,
polygonal and non-manifold modeling, as well as allow the development
of additional modeling tools and commands.

AIA,
Macintosh Special-Interest Group Update
|
|
Architosh.com launched a petition effort to foster an interest
in the development of a native Mac OS X version of the American
Institute of Architects' Documents software package. Documents,
as the product is often called, has been a Windows-centric software
application from the very beginning, leaving Macintosh-based architects
in the United States and abroad no native software solution for
the production of AIA documents used in administering the business
affairs of architectural practice and general construction contracting
and administration. For more information on how to contribute
to this petition effort, please visit the Architosh.com website
