I knew version 11 was great, but I didn't know just how great it was until our users started using it and offering their feedback! It's wonderful getting calls from those of you who have upgraded to 11. You love it, I love it, and industry experts seem to love it too. VectorWorks 11 has exceeded my expectations. I'm confident that it will exceed yours too.

King & King, a medium-sized architectural firm in a suburb of Syracuse, N.Y. had been struggling for years with a CAD application that wasn't performing as promised and was no longer supported by the developer. A thorough search in the field of top applications had lead the firm to choose VectorWorks as the answer to its problem. And that was the easy part.
Bringing its 40-person technical staff up to speed on a new, mission-critical application without missing deadlines and invoking prohibitive overhead costs meant that some training would be necessary. Thrown into the bargain was a substantial level of skepticism on the part of the project managers that they were being saddled with yet another burden in a production environment which was on the verge of collapse under the weight of the project load.
After reviewing many certified VW trainers across the country, Accessible Magic was selected. A series of discussions lead to the development of a syllabus for the initial phase of training. This was easily done since Accessible Magic had been conducting VectorWorks seminars in the Pacific Northwest since 1997.
It was decided that two project groups would participate in the
first on-site training session. Each of the two groups had several
members that were CAD-literate and digitally savvy. Each project
team received two and a half days of training. The material covered
included a basic overview of the application and the elements
of file structure, plus in-depth instruction in 2D drafting techniques
and workgroup referencing.
The major key to success was King & King's ability to quickly
develop a model on which all workgroup referencing would be based.
Each of the teams started work on the construction documents for
a new project. After the completion of the CD phase of these projects,
both project managers stated that the work was completed on time
and within budget, thanks to the user-friendly design of VectorWorks
and well-timed training.
This early success encouraged the partners to implement a program that provided basic VW training to over 40 partners, project managers, team leaders and members of the technical and IT staffs. A second round of training provided the same set of participants with intermediate skills. A Standards Committee and a VW Users Group had been started at the firm with the intent of providing a positive environment for both in-house instruction and ongoing study of a range of tools and techniques.
The transition to VectorWorks and the development of firm-wide proficiency was completed six months ahead of schedule. This encouraged King & King to apply for a grant from New York state that would provide funding for advanced training. The goal of this training was to have at least one person with advanced digital skills on each project team.
These advanced capabilities are now enabling partners and project managers to develop a comprehensive building design much more quickly and to communicate the intent of this design to the client much more effectively and economically.

How can I split selected objects with the Split tool?
|
|
The Split tool, in Line Split mode, can split an object along a drawn line. By default, every object along the line is split; however, there are some instances where only certain objects need to be split. To do this, select the objects to be split. While drawing the line, press the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Macintosh). Only the selected objects will be split(See Image

| How can I extend an exiting NURBS curve or surface? |
|
VectorWorks 11 has a new Extend NURBS menu command. This allows you to extend any NURBS curve or surface along a straight line or smoothed curve. To do this, select a NURBS curve or NURBS surface. Select Model > Extend NURBS (See
Image
1). Select the end point (NURBS curve) or edge (NURBS surface) to extend by using the Next or Previous buttons. Select whether to make a linear or smooth extension. Enter the distance of the extension. Click Preview to see the result. Click OK to extend the NURBS curve or surface (See Image

| How can I change the scale of a texture easily? |
|
The Object Info palette VW 11 includes new functionality to save time and increase productivity. A new Scale option in RenderWorks allows you to interactively scale the texture on a selected object without changing the scale of the texture definition. This is useful not only because you can see the changes to your object as they are made, but you can also change the texture scale for individual objects without creating duplicate texture definitions. VectorWorks 11 adjusts the dash pattern of a 2D line to prevent spaces at either end of the line The adjustment is automatic, so there are no extra steps for you to perform. (See Image

America set out on a 14-city, cross-country tour to highlight
the benefits of the program’s new technology.

ArchiDETAILS Now Available for VectorWorks 11
|
Nemetschek North America announced the release of the new generation of ArchiDETAILS, a comprehensive architectural-detail construction library and drawing system. It contains over 100 pre-drawn detail objects, plus the subcomponents of each object, for easy "snap together" capability in the creation and modification of architectural details. The new library includes detail objects that reflect the latest residential energy codes and framing standards.

The series provides new and existing users the information they need to be successful in learning to draw with VectorWorks.
