| I would like to thank everyone that
came out to see us in New York City. We had one of our best events
ever, with a tremendous showing of VectorWorks users. Unfortunately,
we will be staying at home for the next few months, but for those
of you that like to plan ahead we will be in Las Vegas, Baltimore,
New Orleans, St. Louis, and Boston in October and November. We're
always excited to meet our users. For exact show dates, visit
www.nemetschek.net/news/events.html
Thank you also to everyone who has submitted their firm or a project
for our Profile column. It has been a pleasure to read how VectorWorks
has helped so many architects with their designs. If you'd like
to see your firm profiled in a future eDispatch, send an email
to linda@nemetschek.net
with information on how a VectorWorks product helps you design.

| FIRM
PROFILE |
Shook Kelley
Charlotte, NC & Los Angeles, CA |
For
"Perception Design" Pioneer Shook Kelley, VectorWorks Outperforms
the Competition |
Shook
Kelley is not your father's architectural firm. In fact,
they shrugged off the traditional architecture label in
1994, pioneering the new paradigm of "Perception Design,"
the blending of powerful marketing, advertising, and communication
design disciplines with architecture.
This controlled collision of seemingly divergent disciplines
has netted Shook Kelley a national reputation for taking
complex strategies and turning them into visual cues that
trigger positive consumer awareness. The results are impressive.
Award-winning urban centers like The Charlotte Trolley District
and Birkdale Village, both in Charlotte, South Carolina.
And, retail successes like The Waterfront at Sea World Orlando,
which launches this summer.
|
Biltmore Park |
According to Shook Kelley partner and
founding principal Stan Rostas, combining the disciplines
of brand strategy, architecture, and communication design
enables the firm to "build brands and design environments
that captivate and empower consumers."
It isn't surprising that Shook Kelley's search for the perfect
CAD software partner led them to VectorWorks, a company
that offers the perfect combination of performance, value
and yes, brand dedication.
"VectorWorks has a great feature set and price point," Rostas
says, noting that it outperforms AutoCAD at only a fraction
of the cost. "VectorWorks is just an incredible value."
"We use VectorWorks mainly for its 2D abilities," he says.
"Its speed, strong graphic capabilities and ability to import
a wide variety of formats, all as scaleable images, is very
important to us." |
 |
Shook Kelley leverages the power of a lot of different applications
to generate important pieces of the design puzzle. VectorWorks'
ability to interface seamlessly with other design applications
is a big plus: it saves time, reduces costs and gives Shook
Kelly architects and designers the freedom to create in
a wide variety of applications.
"Best of all," Rostas says, "VectorWorks operates more like
an Adobe design application than a traditional CAD program.
And that's good." |
Chiron America |
With offices on both coasts, in LA and
Charlotte, Shook Kelley is taking "Perception Design" national.
Their unique and powerful approach to architectural design
means that they are constantly evolving the way they work.
"We're not just architects here," Rostas points out. "We're
graphic designers, marketers, psychologists, retail specialists,
interior designers and soundtrack designers. We even have
someone called a cool hunter who is always on the lookout
for the next big consumer trend."
For Perception Design pioneer and paradigm buster Shook
Kelley, the focus is on brand stewardship, consumer culture,
and creating great architecture. Their new corporate anthem
says it succinctly, in three words: "It's all consuming."

| How do
I eliminate a 2D or 3D component of a symbol? |
If you want to get rid of either the 2D or 3D component of a symbol, first change to either the Top/Plan view if deleting the 2D component or change to a 3D veiw if you would like to delete the 3D object. Now simply edit the symbol and choose the 2D or 3D component. Then select all, and delete the objects. Press the exit symbol button. This will leave you with either just a 2D or 3D symbol depending on which part you deleted. |
| Can I
get my drawings printed at a print shop? |
| When going to a print
shop for getting your drawing printed, bring your VectorWorks
CD with you. Have the print shop install the VectorWorks Viewer
from the CD. Or, they can download it at www.nemetschek.net/downloads/vectorworks/viewer10_dl.asp.
Then they can print your VectorWorks file using the Viewer for
the best results. |
| Why are
symbols disappearing in my drawing? |
| If you are placing
symbols or plug-in objects, and they are "disappearing" when you
place them, try turning the Class Options to Show/Snap/Modify
Others from the Organize menu.
|
| How do
I summarize the total number of unique objects within a schedule,
without redundancy? |
| This tip would be handy
for use with the VectorWorks Architect Door Hardware Schedule
or Wall Type Schedule. This example uses the Door Hardware Schedule.
After creating a Door Hardware Schedule, select Window > Worksheets
> Door Hdw Schedule. Click on the header row cell (the one containing
a clear diamond to the left of the row number); this is where
the general information for the listed objects is summarized.
After selecting the header row cell, the Ascending Sort, Descending
Sort, and Summarize icons are available, directly above column
A.
Click and drag the Summarize icon to the A column header cell.
The schedule will show how many unique objects exist and will
list the total number of objects, but only provides the grand
total rather than the individual totals for each unique object
type. For example, in a Door Hardware Schedule, it will show that
there are HDW-2, HDW-1, and HDW-4 type objects, and that there
are 15 total hardware objects, but it will not yet show that there
are four HDW-2 objects, seven HDW-1 objects, and four HDW-4 objects.
Here's how to show the number of unique object types. Highlight
column A and click the Worksheet menu icon (the triangle to the
left of the Descending Sort icon). From the drop-down menu which
displays, select Insert > Column; a new column A is inserted.
In the cell at the intersection of column A and the header row,
enter a value of 1. The individual totals of unique objects are
summarized in column A. |
